Eamon Zayed was the toast of the Brandywell as the striker not only netted his 100th league goal, he scored a hat-trick for good measure as Derry City demolished UCD.
With Gareth McGlynn starting despite a groin problem, the winger got the 'Candystripes' off to the best possible start when netting a superb goal in the 25th minute, but it was not until the second half that Derry turned the screw. Having more or lessbossed the ball throughout, Derry produce the response Stephen Kenny had asked for following last Monday's 3-0 disaster in the Sligo Showgrounds.
And even without the services of the suspended Eddie McCallion, Kevin Deery and Sean Friars, Derrygave a students a major lesson following the changes of ends. Zayed netted his 100thcompetitive goal in League of Ireland football in the 51st minute when his diving header round the top corner of the net after McGlynn had provided the ammunition.
And McGlynn ended thematch as a contest with his second and Derry's third five minutes later. But it got worse forUCD when James McClean added a fourth goal in the 63rd minute, McGlynn again the provider. UCD then had right winger, Dean Marshall, sent off following a 'last man' challenge on Derry substitute, David McDaid, inside the penalty area.
McDaid dusted himself down to make it 5-0 from the spot in the 79th minute, but the Candystripes refused to stop there. Zayed netted number 6 in the 82nd minute and two minutes later he secured he match ball when heading home what was a memorable hat-trick with UCD totally decimated.
Indeed, it could have been more with UCD keeper, Ger Barron, pulling off a number of top class saves throughout the proceedings.
