Mervue Utd return to competitive action on Friday night after a break of two weeks when they play hosts to promotion chasing Limerick FC, who will be making their first visit to Fahy’s Field. (Kick-off 7.45 p.m)
Ironically both sides last league outing was against Wexford Youths, with both sides having contrasting results against the then bottom of the table side. Mervue’s last league action two weeks ago, saw a valuable three points gained on the road with an exciting 5-3 away win over the Youths. The in-form Rory Gaffney scored twice inside half an hour, while Tom King, Jason Molloy and Mike Tierney completed the scoring in an amazing eight goal thriller at Ferrycarrig Park.
Promotion hopefuls Limerick, on the other hand, suffered a shock 1-0 defeat at home to a previously pointless Wexford side last Friday night. A very late injury time winner from Shane Nolan saw the Youths take all three points in Jackman Park last weekend.
Mervue manager Johnny Glynn will be without striker Jason Molloy as he serves a one match ban for four yellow cards, while David Goldbey (ankle), John Mountney (knee) and Dan Cunningham (knee) will also miss out. Nicky Curran will return having missed the win over Wexford and captain Damien O’Rourke could feature on the bench for the first time this season.
Pat Scully will travel without Gary Sheahan (broken leg), Garbhan Coughlan (groin), James O’Brien (hernia), Thomas Lyons (ankle) and Dave Ryan (foot). Scully commented “It’s been an up and down start to the season for us. We have had too many injuries and suspensions and some players have not started the season in good form. Mervue Utd are very much improved this season and it will be a hard place to get a result as other teams have found out already. We will have to work very hard and match their aggression to get the right result”.
The home side will be looking to record a first league win on home turf and extend their two match winning run, while Limerick will be hoping to put last week’s disappointing defeat behind them and record a first away win of the season.
