Sporting Fingal and Bohemians played out a goalless draw in Morton Stadium on Friday night, a result which suits neither side.
Both sides had chances to win the game but in the end Liam Buckley and Pat Fenlon had to settle for a point. Glenn Cronin had the first real chance of the game. His header was comfortably saved by Darren Quigley in the Fingal goal after a neat ball in by Mark Quigley.
Ollie Cahill had the home side’s first effort on target but unfortunately for him, his deflected effort was dealt with by Chris O’Connor. Killian Brennan almost opened the scoring with 19 minutes on the clock. His in-swinging corner almost caught Quigley out but the former UCD man managed to punch it out for another corner.
Moments later, Shaun Williams had a long range strike saved by O’Connor. The Bohs keeper looked less than convince and only managed to tip it out for a corner. Mark Quigley should have put the visitors in front when he latched onto a Brennan through ball but his poor volley somehow went out for a throw-in.
Bohs defender Jason McGuinness had a chance late in the first-half. His headed effort went just over Quigley’s bar and as a result, the side’s went in level at the break.
Pat Fenlon’s men began the second-half brightly and Quigley almost gave the Gypsies the lead when his headed effort bounced off his namesake’s head in the Fingal goal. The keeper managed to deal with it and so it remained scoreless.
Fingal had a shout for a penalty on the hour mark when Conan Byrne went to ground under a challenge from Conor Powell. The referee saw nothing wrong with the challenge and decided not to award Fingal a penalty.
Neither side threatened again until the 85th minute when Glen Cronin saw his deflected effort drift just wide of Quigley’s left-hand post. Despite the obvious deflection, the linesman signalled for a goal-kick to the home side.
Fingal had the ball in the net just seconds later when Shaun Williams rose highest from a Byrne corner to head into the Bohs goal. However, the ref gave the visitors a free out for a foul on Owen Heary. And so it finished 0-0. A fair result but both managers will no doubt be slightly frustrated that they couldn’t claim all three points.
