Seventh played eighth in the Premier Division this Saturday evening as UCD travel west to face Galway United. A defeat for the home team will all but guarantee an unwanted place in the relegation play-off spot. Kick-Off 6.30pm.
Last weekend saw Galway United go down by three goals to nil against Dundalk while UCD were on their way to a surprise 3-2 win against league leaders Shamrock Rovers.
Galway United will be without Captain, Barry Ryan, for the UCD game through suspension. Ryan will also miss the next game as well. Ciaran Foley (ankle) and Alan Murphy (knee) remain sidelined. Philip Reilly (viral infection) maybe available for selection after missing out last week. On a more positive note, both Seamus Conneely and Jamie McKenzie return after suspension.
“Things haven’t gone our way for the last few weeks. The simple fact is we have a very small squad and I was always waiting for the suspension to build up and take effect. For the last three of four game we have played without at least two of our first team players and last Friday we played without four”, Galway manager Sean Connor said.
“If you were to do that with any side they will struggle. I can’t be too critical of the players that came into the side. We have a bench full of kids and we have inexperienced players in key positions and the League of Ireland is a tough, tough league to learn your trade. But the one saving grace for me is that for the next few games we will be nearly at full strength.”
For UCD Chris Mulhall remains doubtful. Long term absentee Sean Harding has started training again but is some way from returning. Otherwise Martin Russell has a full squad raring to go including some regular members of the team now only sidelined by the excellence of those who have deputised for them.
“The run has been good for our confidence and points tally but that apart it’s history,” explains Martin Russell. “This League is very competitive and there have been occasions when we might have won games that we didn’t. An example was our one-nil defeat at the hands of Galway at the Bowl in July. It could be just as tight at Terryland on Saturday and we need to be fully focused to perform to the best of our ability. This is a very important game.
