Dundalk 1 - 2 Bohemians

Bohemians took all three points at Oriel Park on Friday as they scraped home 2-1. It was very harsh on the Lilywhites as they more than matched their opponents and deserved a draw. Mark Quigley opened the scoring only for Matthew Tipton to equalise with a penalty. Paul Keegan then scored the winner in debatable fashion in the second half.

The opening exchanges were all in Dundalk’s favour however they fell behind again as they have developed a habit of doing.

Bohemians opened the scoring on 37 minutes as Brian Shelley got on the end of a quick throw in wide right and slung in a lovely far post cross where Mark Quigley rose to head back across Peter Cherrie and into the far corner. Ian Foster would have been hoping that the reappearance of Liam Burns would staunch the flow of goals against but as yet he still awaits a vital clean sheet.

The Dundalk equaliser took only four minutes as a cross field ball fell behind the Bohs back line, Matthew Tipton tried to lift the ball over his marker and it struck Shelley with the linesman Mark Gavin immediately signalling a penalty. Tipton grabbed the ball in the time honoured fashion of many a goal hungry striker and confidently sent Chris O’Connor the wrong way as he slotted to the bottom corner.

The game had developed nicely and both teams were playing their part to the full in a great spectacle for the paying public.

Bohs edged ahead on 56 minutes as a long ball down the left was chased down by Liam Burns with Paul Keegan in close attention. As Burns tried to let the ball go out for a throw he went down with a bit a help from Keegan, the ref decided there was nothing untoward and Keegan centred for Aaron Greene 10 yards out. Greene brought the ball down, changed feet and shot only for Shaun Kelly to block the effort, however Keegan had followed in and slotted home from around eight yards.

Dundalk’s hopes of rescuing the game took a decided turn for the worse as Stephen Maher picked up his second yellow card on 61 minutes and got first use of the shower gel. Bohs used their numerical advantage well and despite a valiant effort from the ten men they were able to see the game out but not without the aid of a hotly disputed home gaol for Tipton that was scratched off for offside.

So it’s Bray next up for a Dundalk team desperate for a change in fortunes whilst Pat Fenlon’s boys will face an away date at Drogheda United.
