Bohemians begin the defence of their league trophy with a tricky assignment against Premier Division new boys Sporting Fingal at Dalymount Park on Friday night. (Kick off 7.35)
The Ravens, who will be making their debut in the top flight of Irish football, couldn’t have been handed a harder start as they take on a Bohs side that will be aiming for three league titles in a row this season.
Pat Fenlon strengthened his squad with a total of eight players during the pre-season and many of these should feature in Friday's game. Front men Mark Quigley and Raf Cretaro will all be looking to mark their debuts with a goal, while Barry Murphy is expected to start.
After last season’s promotion and cup-winning campaign Fingal head into the season with high expectations. Some have tipped Fingal to challenge Bohs and Shamrock Rovers for the title this season and this game should give an indication as to how they might fair.
The game will also see the return of a Bohs legend to Dalymount Park in the shape of Glen Crowe. The 32-year-old was released by the club early in pre-season and was quickly snapped up by Liam Buckley.
Buckley has also bolstered his squad with several other quality signings such as First Division Player of the Year Ronan Finn, Shane Barrett and Ger O’Brien. The Fingal boss has also managed to retain the majority of last season’s squad.
If Fingal do indeed discover that a league title is beyond their reach this season, with the quality of players in their squad they should find a Europa League spot could be well within their grasp.
For Bohs on the other hand, it looks like it could be a straight fight with arch-rivals Shamrock Rovers to be crowned champions. The Gypsies would be considered favourites to win their third consecutive title and will be looking to get off to a good start. Venue: Dalymount Park
