Wexford Youths welcome Shelbourne FC to Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday for their first home fixture of the season, kick-off 2pm.
Both sides didn’t get off to the starts they would have wished for last weekend and will be hoping for improvement this time around. Wexford went down 3-0 to local rivals Waterford United, while Shelbourne earned a hard fought point against Monaghan United at Tolka Park thanks to a late Eric Foley strike.
Wexford Youths will be without the services of Anthony Wolfe. While defender David Breen is a major doubt for Noel O’Connor’s men.
In the build up to the game O’ Connor said: “Shelbourne are one of the promotion favourites, so it’s going to be a tough contest. We always need a win regardless of the result of the previous game. We hope that this year we can improve on our home form and pick up some more points”.
The Youths have moved their home fixtures from Friday nights to Sunday afternoons in a bid to get the punters back supporting the team. It’s a move that the Youths and O’Connor himself feel will work.
“We hope to have a big crowd at Ferrycarrig Park come Sunday in what is our first home fixture of the season. Hopefully we can put on a performance and get the crowd behind us” said O’ Connor.
Shelbourne are likely to make some changes this time out following the performance against Monaghan, Shels assistant manager Collie O’Neill commenting, when interviewed after the game, that the team “lacked desire out there tonight”. He continued “Some of those players will have a very short Shelbourne career if they continue like that. We cannot let other teams come to our patch and dictate the play”.
Very doubtful for the game is Eric Foley, who has not trained all week, is suffering from a groin injury. Jack Flynn once again is unavailable as he is serving the second match of a three match additional suspension following the receipt of a red card at the end of last season, while with St. Pats.
As if to emphasise his point, all members of the squad who didn’t feature on Friday last, together with some of the ‘A’ league team took some part in a benefit game against Sporting Fingal, played on Monday night last.
