Wexford Youths welcome Monaghan United to Ferrycarrig Park on Sunday afternoon for their Airtricity Divison One clash, kick-off 2pm.
Noel O’Connor’s Youths got their first victory of the season after they beat Mervue United 1-0 thanks to a Jimmy Keohane strike. Monaghan bounced back from their 1-0 defeat to Finn Harps last weekend with an impressive 1-0 EA Sports cup win over Shelbourne FC on Tuesday night.
Last season Monaghan piped Wexford for 5th place after they beat them away from home in the last game of the season. In fact the Youths have never beaten Monaghan at Ferrycarrig Park and it’s something that O’Connor wants to rectify.
“We struggled against them last year, so we know what we’re up against. We’ve never beaten Monaghan at home so it’s going to be a difficult test for us. They had an impressive victory over Shelbourne during the week so they’ll be on a high” said O’Connor.
O’Connor is pleased with how his side has started the new season.
“We looked good against Shelbourne at home and backed that up with an important win over Mervue. It’s a difficult place to come away with three points (Terryland Park) and teams will struggle up there this season” O’Connor said.
Wexford have a clean bill of health going into the game after they welcomed back David Breen to the team after he missed the last few games.
Monaghan manager Mick Cooke has a number of suspensions and injuries heading into this game. Dom Tierney, Shane Grimes, Karl Bermingham, Stephen Crossan, Daragh Hanaphy and Darren Kelly are all out with injuries whilst Cathal O’ Connor and Conor McMahon are both suspended.
