Longford Town have a chance to move up another place in the table when they host bottom side Salthill Devon at Flancare Park on Saturday night (kick-off 7.30pm).
Last weekend the Town moved up to 8th following their 2-1 win over Wexford Youths with only their second away win of the season. Three points against Salthill will see them leapfrog Youths into 7th place in the table.
Mid-table was the aim at the start of the season but centre-forward Lee Roche admitted they want to finish as high as possible. “As a squad we want to finish as high as we can,” he told extratime.ie. “We believe we can. If we don’t we will stay together at the end of the season and will be better for it next season. We’re taking it one step at a time; game by game. If we beat Salthill Devon hopefully we can take another step up the table. ”
Roche joined the Town back in June and scored his first goal last weekend in Ferrycarrig Park. He is delighted with the way things have gone so far. “I’m starting to enjoy myself at the club. I knew it was a step up from Junior football. Last season was great for me but I felt it was time to move on. I have played in the last five games which is great. There are players still to come back but Tony (Cousins) has told me to work hard if I want to keep my spot,” he said.
Town have been boosted during the week with the return to training of the injured trio of captain Philip Byrne, midfielder Thomas Hyland and striker Derek Glynn. Manager Tony Cousins mightn’t risk any of them for this game though. Don Cowan, Craig Mooney and Dave Freeman still remain out.
Midfielder Craig Walsh who joined on loan from Shamrock Rovers last week should be line to make his Town debut.
Although they are currently bottom of the table Salthill Devon will make it tough for the Town. In recent weeks their performances have improved and they made it difficult for Cork City Foras Co-op last weekend. The Leesiders had to score twice in the final 10 mins to claim the three points in Salthill.
