Mervue Utd travel to Jackman Park tonight to take on fourth place Limerick FC in the second series of league games in the Airtricity First Division. (Kick-off 7.45 p.m.)
Mervue United finally secured that elusive first win of the season last week while away to Finn Harps with a fine 3-2 victory. The victory saw them leapfrog city rivals Salthill Devon at the foot of the table. Two goals from the impressive Rory Gaffney, his second brace of the season, and another from Evan Connolly saw them collect their first three points.
Limerick hit a winning streak in May with league wins over Shelbourne and Athlone followed by an impressive 3-0 win over Cork City FORAS in the EA Sports Cup on Tuesday night. The latter saw them qualify for the quarter-finals of the competition.
The two sides shared the spoils as they drew 1-1 in Terryland Park in the opening fixture of the season. John Tierney gave the visitors a first half lead that night, as a controversial second half equaliser from the now departed Kevin Barrett gave the home team a share of the points.
Darren Young (ankle), David O’Dowd (knee), Martin Conneely, Mark Ludden (groin), Ollie Keogh, Phillip Ryan and David Goldbey are all out injured. Defender Tommy Walsh is also unavailable, but brothers Enda and Nicky Curran are both available again having missed last weekend’s win. Mike Elwood also returns from injury.
“We had an excellent start against Finn Harps last Friday going two up after six minutes. The lads worked their socks off to keep us in front and thankfully Rory Gaffney got a third for us late on”, Mervue Utd Manager Tom French said.
“When they got one back after a minute there was a few tense moments as I was dreading another repeat of the Salthill game were they equalised with the last kick of the match. It was a real team performance with Rory Gaffney leading the line up front and netting two excellent goals for us”, French concluded.
