Derry City continue their quest for the First Division top spot as they welcome fellow promotion chasers Shelbourne on Saturday evening. Kick-off 6pm.
Derry City’s almost unbelievable loss of form has seen just one win in five games and has allowed Monaghan United the upper hand in the race for the title. Last weekend saw more dropped points as they drew 1-1 away to Derry City. Shelbourne on the other hand grabbed their fifth win on the bounce as they beat Cork City 2-0 in Tolka Park.
Eugene Ferry will deputise in goal as Gerard Doherty is suspended. Kevin Deery, Thomas McBride and Thomas McEleney are all battling injuries.
"Shelbourne think they can win the league, and so do we. They are on a fantastic run," Derry City manager Stephen Kenny told BBC Sport. “Our young players have done brilliantly to get us into a great position. We have let things slip recently, drawing three matches we should have won. Things are still in our own hands but there is no room for error."
“It’s a game we can’t afford to drop points. It is a big game for both teams. The added spice is that it’s Derry and Shels. They are always big games and there’s never much in the games. In the last few games we haven’t taken our chances and given away stupid goals. We can’t afford to do that against Shels”, Derry City defender Eddie McCallion told Extratime.
Dinny Corcoran is only name on the Shelbourne injury list this week with a knee injury. Colin O’Brien took part in the latter stages of the win over Cork City Foras after coming through a late fitness test. Philly Gorman also returns to the reckoning after taking a full part in training during the week, following his absence for a couple of weeks. Paul Shiels is suspended for Alan Mathews team.
Despite Derry’s poor recent form, the quality is still in the squad and this will be a big test with Shelboure finding form at the right part of the season.
