Dundalk 2 - 0 Sporting Fingal

Dundalk ran out 2-0 winners over Sporting Fingal to progress to the
quarter finals of the EA Sports Cup. A goal in each half from Ciaran
McGuigan and Fahrudin Kudozovic saw them home but the scoreline
possible flattered them a little.
Both teams showed changes from their previous outing and the Dundalk
line up was further disrupted on 20 minutes as Johnny Breen had to be
withdrawn. By that time Gaynor had missed a one on one with Brendan
Clarke as he placed his shot against the keeper’s legs.
Ciaran McGuigan opened the scoring on 24 minutes when a Ross Gaynor
cross was deflected en route and spilled by Brendan Clarke for a
corner. Gaynor swung over a flat hard cross to the centre where
McGuigan had lost his marker, possibly with the help of a push and
although he didn’t make a clean contact it was enough to send the ball
to the back of the net from six yards.
To be fair to Sporting they kept probing at the Dundalk backline and
Shane McFaul and Alan Kirby were showing up well for them. Chances
were spurned by Conan Byrne and Colm James and they would have felt that
something was still within their reach in the second half.
Sporting opened brightly in the second period and chances came and
went for Glen Crowe and James before Dundalk extended their lead
on 59 minutes.
A lovely move brought the Lilywhites joy from Faz Kudozovic. Alan
Cawley found room to send Tiarnan Mulvenna scampering away down the
right side, his cross to Fenn was laid into the path of Faz who coolly
found the far corner of the net from 12 yards.
There was no shortage of effort from the visitors as they tried to get
on the scoresheet but ultimately it all proved in vain. Next up
Dundalk face Galway at Oriel on Friday and Sporting will host league
leaders St Pats.
