Mervue United 3 - 1 Athlone Town

Mervue United finally ended their barren run of ten games without win after Saturday night’s 3-1 win over Athlone Town. Mervue went into this game having only scored three goals in those ten games but they doubled that tally with this win.
Athlone Town took the lead on 14 minutes when Robbie Benson robbed Nigel Keady before he crossed for Austin Skelly to tap home the opening goal. Mervue were back on level terms nine minutes later when winger Rory Gaffney lobbed an unsuspecting John McGuiness from all of 35 yards for a beautiful effort.
Mervue upped their game in the second half and a double substitution on 73 minutes brought about the second. Mervue sub Evan Connolly was only on the pitch a minute when he powerfully headed home Mark Ludden’s left wing in swinging cross with his first touch on 74 minutes.
Mervue doubled their lead nine minutes later when once again Ludden was the provider with another left wing cross which Mike Tierney drilled past McGuiness to make it 3-1.
Mervue finally get back on the winning trail having last won against Limerick way back in May.
