Weather again disrupts U17 Women’s Elite games

The Republic of Ireland’s UEFA European Women’s U17 Elite Phase mini-tournament in Austria has not been completed after the final two group games were postponed because of the weather.

The four teams will now travel home and await a decision by UEFA in the coming days as to when and where the games will be played.

Ireland were due to play Norway in what was a virtual dead rubber for both teams with Poland taking on Austria to decide the group winners and qualifiers for the finals in Switzerland in June.

It was the second time this week games in the group were postponed because of heavy snow. On Tuesday the opening two games were put back 24 hours after both pitches were covered in 15cm of snow.

Ireland lost 2-1 to Poland on Wednesday and Friday’s 4-1 defeat by Austria ended their chances of qualifying for the finals for the first time since finishing as runners-up in 2010.
