Hyland hoping Blues can build on EA Cup win

Waterford United’s Craig Hyland is hoping his side can build on Tuesday night’s EA Sports Cup win as Mervue United visit the RSC on Saturday evening.

The Blues keeper was an integral part of a 2-1 win against Cobh Ramblers on Tuesday as they Blues won their first competitive match of the season. The win sees the Blues in better form heading in their league match against Mervue United, and former Longford Town keeper Hyland believes that a win is vital to get their season started.

"We really need to get three points and kick on having had the draw against Finn Harps and losing to Longford, we really don’t want there to be a big gap this early in the season," Hyland told Extratime.ie after Tuesday's win. "I feel we can get three points against Mervue and kick on as a team it’s really important to put a winning streak together and stay in touch with the teams at the top.

“It’s good [to get the first win]. The first game was tough to get a draw having been on top and then again the same with Longford we were pegged back after going ahead se we kind of felt in the dressing room that we needed to get a win to really kick start our season. It’s only two games gone, and we’ve played probably the two teams who are tipped to be favourites, so to get a good result and kick on and kick-start our season is really important."

Hyland said his side were a little in the unknown with dealing with Cobh Ramblers and admitted that they have quality to do well this season.

“Cobh are somewhat of an unknown quantity, nobody really knows much about their players as a lot of players have come in, and from junior league,. They had a very good result against Wexford so nobody really knew what to expect and they really put it up to us in the second half. They worked really hard and worked around us. They’re a good team and I think they’ll do well this season.”

The game also saw Seamus Long and Peter White return to the starting line-up, which Hyland said was very pleasing to see. Hyland admitted that the performance might not have been to standard, but that the win was the most important thing.

“It was a good win, it wasn’t pretty at the end but a win is a win and hopefully from here on in we can build on that for Saturday night against Mervue United."
