Ground-by-ground Guides - Hunky Dorys Park

Ground: Hunky Dorys Park, home to Drogheda United, was formerly known as United Park (and O2 Park for a time) and has played host to the Louth side since 1979. They opened the stadium by hosting Queens Park Rangers on August 12th that year. In 2008, there were plans to leave the ground and move to a 10,000 all-seater stadium on the edge of town but those proposals soon fell through. The stadium has a capacity of 2,000 of which 400 are seats located mostly in the clubhouse stand and has been known as Hunky Dorys Park since 2010 when the crisps company who sponsored the shirts, opted to do the same for the stadium. Renovations also took place that year to include more seats, new toilets and easier wheelchair access.

How To Get There: The stadium itself is situated not far from the city centre and is situated within walking distance of both there and the main bus station, on the north side of town close to the hospital. From the bus depot turn left and follow the main road over the bridge of peace (the main bridge), continue on straight through the crossroads and uphill until you see Mother Hughes pub ahead. This is located at the bottom of the Windmill Road. Continue ahead along the right hand side of the pub to the top of the Windmill Road. Hunky Dorys Park is on your left opposite the main entrance to the Lourdes Hospital.

By car: Take the Drogheda North exit off the M1 and follow the signs for Drogheda. The landmark Lourdes Hospital is across the road from Hunky Dorys Park and there is plenty of parking in the Lourdes overflow carpark, situated across the road from the Crosslane’s entrance.

Away Allocation: Supporters travelling to cheer their team on at Hunky Dorys Park are placed in a terraced stand in the corner next to the clubhouse stand. Toilet and food facilities are located by walking around the back of the stand housing the home fans although there is seldom any trouble caused at Drogheda United games and the clubhouse food is among the best.

Nearby Time Killers: For those historically inclined, the site of the Battle of the Boyne lies to the west of the town and is open to tourists, having been redeveloped in 2008.

Nearby Pubs: McPhails, located on Saint Laurence Street, is a vibrant, cosy pub located about a 15-20 minute walk from the ground that can often host a good atmosphere leading up to kick off.

The Windmill House on the road heading towards the stadium also serves food as well as drink before games.

Local Food: Outside of the aforementioned Windmill House there are some popular fine dining restaurants in the area such as the D Hotel or The Riverside among others. Most of the major fast food chains are also catered for throughout the town.

Accommodation: Killowen House B&B and Orley House B&B are both located on the Dublin Road across the river but are only roughly a 10 minute drive from the stadium. For a more central location, the D Hotel is located on Marsh Road close to the Scotch Hall Shopping Centre.

Parking: It is best for fans to park at the Crosslanes which can be found directly behind the stadium itself.

Did You Know?: The first floodlit game on the ground took place as recently as October 1993 and the Drogs triumphed by beating Shamrock Rovers 2-1. It was one of the few bright sparks that season as United were relegated while Rovers romped to the title.
