Peamount United secured a hard-fought victory over Wexford Youths to go clear at the top of the Bus Éireann Women's National League.

Aine O'Gorman opened the scoring early on after capitalising on a defensive error and bursting forward to drive a shot into top corner from 25 yards.

Ciara Rossiter might have levelled when she beat the Peamount offside trap but couldn't find the back of the net thanks to the legs of home keeper Monica McGuirk.

Julie-Ann Russell created an excellent chance for Stephanie Roche but her header came back off the crossbar.

Peamount extended their lead before half-time when Sara Lawlor ran onto a ball over the top and went through the score.

Wexford got back in the tie early in the second half when Rianna Jarrett scored from the penalty spot after she had been taken down by goalkeeper McGuirk.

Both sides battled to add to their tallies but no further breakthrough came and Peamount held on for the precious three points.
