Shamrock Rovers midfielder Rhys Gorman has been named as the Airtricity U19 League’s Player of the Month for November after showing his versatility while battling through the pain barrier.

The 18-year-old broke his left wrist while playing against St Patrick’s Athletic in October and then missed Rovers exit from the Enda McGuill Cup at the hands of Drogheda United. When he returned to action in November he was asked to play centre-back as Rovers tried to bounce back from two successive defeats and he proved his adaptability as the Hoops went through the month unbeaten after a 1-0 win over Bohemians and 1-1 draws against Waterford United and UCD.

Gorman, who is in his second year at Shamrock Rovers after playing schoolboys football with St Joseph’s Boys and St Kevin’s, received his November Player of the Month award today at FAI Headquarters in Abbotstown from Jillian Saunders of Airtricity and Republic of Ireland U19 team manager Paul Doolin.

Afterwards, Gorman said: “I was chuffed when I heard about it. I never really won anything like this before and it is nice to get the recognition. However, it wouldn’t have happened without my coaches and team-mates at Shamrock Rovers. If we weren’t doing well, I don’t think there would be any awards so it’s as much for them as for me.”
