Students secure Leahy signature
UCD have announced that 23-year-old club captain Michael Leahy will remain with Martin Russell’s side for the 2013 season.
Confirming the announcement over Twitter, the news comes as a welcome boost to UCD’s plans for the season ahead after seeing five of their squad from 2012 depart the Belfield Bowl to other rival clubs in the Premier Division.
To date Paul O’Conor and Graham Rusk (both Drogheda United), Ciaran Nangle and Chris Lyons (both Bohemians) and Daniel Ledwith (Shamrock Rovers) have all left the club, leaving manager Martin Russell with the challenging task of having to replace some of his most prominent and key players from last season.
Announcing his decision to stay with The Students on his Twitter account, Leahy said: “Despite some tempting offers, I’ve decided to stay and re-sign with UCD AFC for next season. Looking forward to a big year!”
Leahy will lead Martin Russell’s side next year once more as the Students now look to maintain the rest of their squad from last year and at the same time, integrate their promising U19 squad who currently lie in second place in the Elite Section of the League of Ireland U19 league.
