Dunleavy signs on for another year with Cork

Cork City have announced the re-signing of John Dunleavy on a one year deal.

Having signed from Wolves last January, the Donegal-man proved an instant hit with the Cork City faithful with a series of committed performances for the Rebel Army.

Although his season was interrupted with an ankle sustained in the 3-1 loss away to UCD in August, Dunleavy managed 22 league appearances this season starring both in defence and midfield.

Dunleavy also scored what was perhaps one of Cork City’s goals of the season as he broke from defence to rise highest at the back post and score what was a late equaliser against Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght in June.

Speaking to the club’s official website after penning his new contract, Dunleavy said : “I am pleased to have signed a new contract and I am really excited about next season. I really enjoyed my first year in Cork, and from my point of view it went really well, so I hope that we can push on next year and finish higher up the table.

“We are all working hard already in the close-season and we want to improve on last season. We are working on the physical side of things now so that we can come back in for pre-season in good shape and look to push on and aim for a top four finish.”

Manager Tommy Dunne also expressed his satisfaction at signing the utility player to CorkCityFC.net: “Johnny is a good lad and he did well for us last season. It was his first full, proper season of first team football, and I am hoping that he will push on now this season.

“He did very well last season, before he suffered an ankle injury, but he came back into the side and did very well, so I am delighted that we will have him on board for another season.”

This re-signing brings to nine, the number of players already contracted to play in Turners Cross next season, with more expected in the coming days.
