Former Derry City centre half Mark McChrystal has joined Scunthorpe United on loan from Tranmere Rovers until January. The 28 year-old has struggled to break into Tranmere manager Ronnie Moore’s plans this season, with the Merseyside outfit currently sitting top of League One.

Speaking to ExtraTime.ie, McChrystal is pleased with the move, and is looking forward to getting more minutes under his belt with Scunthorpe. “I’m happy to have joined the club, especially to get first team football.
“Obviously the boys are flying at Tranmere, and are top of the league so I’m hoping I can come here and get more minutes under my belt.

“It’s a one-month loan deal at a good club, so I’m delighted with that. I’m still under contract at Tranmere until the end of the season, so hopefully it goes well here for me,” he said.

The former Northern Ireland Under 21 international joined Tranmere on a six month deal from Derry City in January 2011, and having played a key role in then-manager Les Parry’s side, was subsequently offered a two year deal to stay at Prenton Park.

Since then, McChrystal has amassed almost 50 appearances for the club, but has seen his progress this season halted due to injury and other defenders playing well during Tranmere’s excellent start to the season.

He joined Scunthorpe in time to play in the Iron’s 2-1 defeat against Bury last night, in which he played the full 90 minutes.

He said: “Hopefully I have a successful month here, and then I’ll see what happens after that.”

He will be hoping to help change Scunthorpe’s fortune, as Brian Law’s side currently sit 23rd in League One.
