Waterford United protest dismissed

An FAI Disciplinary Committee has dismissed the protest made by Waterford United regarding Dundalk forward Michael Rafter.

The claim made by the Blues was on the grounds that Rafter was ineligible to play in the second leg of the Promotion-Relegation Play-off Final for Dundalk on the 2nd of November.

The Disciplinary Committee, comprised of Barry Collins, John Kane and John Coughlan, heard submissions from both Waterford United and Dundalk, as well as the Airtricity League, before reaching their decision.

The statement read:

“The rules regarding registration and transfer of players allow for their movement from the amateur game to the professional game within the professional registration periods.

“The Disciplinary Committee ruled that Michael Rafter’s transfer to Dundalk complied with the rules and therefore he was eligible to play in the fixture on November 2, 2012”

Dundalk won the Play-Off Final 4-2 on aggregate, drawing 2-2 in Oriel Park before winning 2-0 in the Regional Sports Centre to retain their place in them 2013 Airtricity League Premier Division – with the man in question Michael Rafter scoring both of the goals in the pivotal 2-0 victory.

Waterford United have the right to appeal the decision to the FAI Appeals Committee as per FAI Rule 156, however unlikely that may be.
