Rovers set to appoint new manager

Shamrock Rovers have confirmed that they will announce their new manager this coming Wednesday. The club will hold a press conference with Rovers club chairman Jonathan Roche where the new manager will be announced.

Although the club have yet to confirm who the new boss will be, Trevor Croly is widely expected to be the new manager.  It is anticipated that the 38-year-old will leave his current club St. Patrick’s Athletic, where he is assistant to Liam Buckley, to go back to the club where he was assistant manager up till the summer of 2011.

Croly, who worked at Rovers under Michael O’Neill’s rein as manager, is a highly respected coach in the game.  This would be his first role as manager at an Airtricity League club.

Rovers have been without a permanent manager since the start of September when Stephen Kenny was sacked following their 1-0 defeat by Bohemians in Tallaght.  The board eventually lost patience with Kenny after this defeat coming on the back of a number of poor results and performances.  The pressure had been heaped on Kenny following three heavy away league defeats to St. Patrick’s Athletic (5-1), Sligo Rovers (3-0) and Bohemians 4-0 earlier in the season and Rovers’ embarrassing early exit from Europe following the defeat to FK Ekranas from Lithuania.

Brian Laws took temporary charge of Rovers after Kenny’s departure fulfilling the role of Director of Football.  Laws took up the managerial position with Scunthorpe United when the season ended last week.  He failed to get Rovers into third place in the league and with Derry City’s win in the FAI Cup final on Sunday, it means that there will be no European football for the new man in charge.
