NI Premiership Round-up - Week 14
Liam Boyce’s thirteenth goal of the season was enough to earn Cliftonville a draw at Glentoran and open up a three point lead for the Reds at the top of the Danske Irish Premeirship.
The former Werder Bremen striker controlled and volleyed home on 67 minutes to cancel out Jimmy Callacher’s free-kick on the stroke of half-time which had underlined Glentoran’s first half superiority.
Boyce was unlucky not to seal all three points for the North Belfast side as his header came back off the upright late on, but Cliftonville were reduced to ten men when Marc Smyth received a second yellow for a foul on Andrew Waterworth who was a constant menace all afternoon. The result sees the Glens slip to seventh, behind fierce rivals Linfield on goal difference.
The Champions seem to be finding some form after an indifferent start to season as goals from Mark McAllister, Peter Thompson and Jamie Mulgrew were enough to give Linfield a comfortable win over Donegal Celtic at Suffolk Road.
Ballinamallard United move into second place in the table after goals in either half gave them a routine 2-0 victory over bottom placed Lisburn Distillery. Former Sligo Rovers defender Steve Feeney scored his second goal in successive games to give the Mallards a first half lead before Chris Curran wrapped up all three points for the home side with a fine individual effort in the second period.
Crusaders moved up to third with a comprehensive 5-1 victory over Glenavon who have only picked up one point in their last seven games. Timmy Adamson scored twice in game that was over at half time with the home side four goals to the good. Paul Heatley added a fifth in the second half that his performance deserved with Andy McGrory grabbing a consolation for Glenavon in the dying minutes to leave the Lurgan based side only three points off the bottom side Lisburn Distillery.
Curtis Allen’s late equaliser was not sufficient to prevent Coleraine slipping to fourth as they failed to overcome Portadown who took the lead through Darren Murray’s first half penalty while Ballymena United proved too strong for Dungannon Swifts, running out 3-1 winner in Stangmore Park.
