Whelan and St Ledger confirmed out
Both Sean St Ledger and Glenn Whelan have, unsurprisingly, been officially ruled out of the Republic of Ireland’s upcoming games with Germany and the Faroe Islands after scans confirmed the duo will not be fit enough to take part.
The pair picked up injuries in action for their club sides, Leicester City and Stoke City, on Saturday and Sunday respectively. And despite joining up with the remainder of the squad earlier today, scans have confirmed Giovanni Trapattoni’s fears over them both.
Both Kevin Doyle and James McClean were also scratched from the squad following injuries sustained over the weekend, though McClean still harbours slim hopes of being fit enough for the Faroe Islands game on Tuesday week.
An FAI press release, confirming the bad news, read: “Further to scans earlier in the day both Sean St Ledger and Glen Whelan have been confirmed as out of both matches against Germany and the Faroe Islands.”
