Germany’s defensive difficulties have increased following the withdrawal of Borussia Dortmund central defender Mats Hummels from the Germany squad for Friday’s game against Ireland at the Aviva.

The defender picked up a foot injury in the Bundesliga on Sunday during the 1-1 draw with Hannover 96, following on from the withdrawal of Lars Bender from the squad over the weekend also due to injury.

Manager Joachim Loew has recalled 29 year old Heiko Westermann into his squad.  The Hamburg defender has 24 caps for Germany and his last appearance with the German national team was in the 0-0 with Sweden in Gothenburg in late 2010.

The number two side in the world play Sweden in Berlin next week following Friday’s game.
