Former Cork City midfielder Dave Meyler will join up with the Republic of Ireland squad at Portmarnock on Monday ahead of next week’s World Cup 2014  double-header with Germany and the Faroe Islands.

The Sunderland star made his debut for the senior team in last month’s friendly against Oman and although he missed out on the initial squad named by Giovanni Trapattoni, this evening Meyler was informed that he is to join the squad after this weekend’s Premier League action, where the Black Cats take on Manchester City.

He is expected to take Kevin Doyle’s place in the squad after the Wolves man injured his thigh in training this morning, though Doyle has yet to be fully ruled out by the FAI with results of a scan expected tomorrow.

An association spokesperson said:  “David Meyler has been called up to Giovanni Trapattoni’s squad to face Germany in Aviva Stadium on October 12 and the Faroe Islands in Torsvrllur Stadium, Torshavn on October 16.

“David will join up with the squad in Dublin in time for training on Monday morning.

“In other news, Kevin Doyle picked up a thigh injury during training with Wolves this morning.

“The extent of the injury remains to be seen. Kevin is having a scan later this evening with results expected tomorrow.”

Meanwhile, the FAI confirmed that the Germany game in the Aviva next Friday night has sold out.
