Both Sligo and Letterkenny Rovers continued their unbeaten start to the 12/13 season following a 0-0 draw at Sligo I.T. on Saturday afternoon. With Letterkenny having a 100% record in their opening two games and Sligo Rovers having a win and a draw, it was a chance for both clubs to keep their impressive starts going.

The 11th minute saw that first chance fall to Sligo Rovers when Gary Armstrong crossed the ball into the Letterkenny area, and an attempted clearance from Conor McGlynn almost went wrong and found its way into his own net but it just went wide of the post and out for a corner. The ball was in the Letterkenny Rovers net ten minutes later when a free was awarded for a foul on Colm Feeney which was taken by David Brick who sent it in to Hugh McFadden who hit it home, only to be ruled out for offside.

In the 41st minute Noah Mailey gave away a free kick on the right hand side of the Letterkenny box, the ball was swung in by Cian Brennan and Sligo Rovers midfielder Ryan McManus managed to get a foot to it but his chance hit off the post and it was eventually cleared away by the Letterkenny defence. The Bit o’Red started the second half with a great run through the middle by Cian Brennan who played it into Colm Feeney but his shot was easily saved by Jason Coen in the Letterkenny goal.

The Donegal men saw very little of the ball throughout the whole game but they did have a chance in the 69th minute but Darragh Mulgrew’s shot went wide of the Sligo Rovers goal. In the 74th minute Dale Gorman saw his shot from well outside of the area spilled by Adam Murphy in the Sligo Rovers goal but the keeper recovered quickly to gather the ball before any danger from the Letterkenny strikers.

Neither side could make the breakthrough and Sligo Rovers will perhaps be the more disappointed side having had the majority of possession, but failing to convert any of the few chances created. Up next for Sligo Rovers is a home tie to bottom of the table Fanad United next weekend, while Letterkenny Rovers are at home to a struggling Derry City side.
