Hegarty hoping to use home advantage

Finn Harps manager Paul Hegarty is hoping that teams will find it difficult making the long trip up to Ballybofey this season.

The newly promoted side take on Cobh Ramblers in their first match of the new eircom League of Ireland Premier Division season and Hegarty has his sights set on collecting the three points on offer.

Hegarty knows that the support of the local crowd could help to turn Finn Park into a cauldron that not many teams would relish coming into, or travelling all the way up the country for.

“I find it amazing that some of the other teams think that Donegal is a million miles away,” Hegarty told extratime.ie.

“Everyone has to travel around the country though. We had to do it last year when we played down at Cobh Ramblers and Wexford Youths.

“I would certainly hope that playing at home would be to our advantage and our fans could get behind the team to push them forward to secure a few wins.

“I’m not sure if the travelling really affects the players as much as some think. When we went down to play Dundalk last year, we were terrible, but only a few days later down at Waterford United we were excellent. I don’t know what happened, but we clicked that night and everything went right.

“So hopefully playing at home is to our advantage and we turn Finn Park into a fortress of sorts – starting with the game against Cobh Ramblers.”
