U-19 Elite League gets underway

This season’s League of Ireland Under-19 Elite League kicked off this week with five games down for decision over the weekend.


Last season’s winner Cork City begin the defence of their title on Sunday (2pm). Manager Stuart Aston will be looking for a good start with a home tie against Drogheda United In Bishopstown. Runners up last season, Shamrock Rovers, begin their season away to UCD on Sunday in the UCD Bowl (12pm).


Tommy Griffin’s Waterford United, who finished in third place last season, travel to face Shelbourne on Saturday afternoon (2pm) in the AUL grounds.


Mervue United have been replaced in the Elite League by Cobh Ramblers who won the Southern Division by two points, and they begin the season with a trip to face Salthill Devon in Drom on Saturday (2pm).


Finn Harps won last season’s Northern Division by six points and have replaced Wexford Youths in the Elite Division. They welcome Bray Wanderers to Finn Park on Sunday (3pm).
 

The opening game of the season took place on Tuesday as Bohemians and St. Patrick’s Athletic played out a six-goal thriller, with Owen Heary’s Bohemians coming out on top in a 4-2 win in Dalymount Park.
 

Three players will miss the start of the season with suspensions carrying over from last season. Lindo Majola (Drogheda United) carries over a one match automatic suspension while Joseph Gaughan (Salthill Devon) and Stephen Watters (Drogheda United) both carry one game suspension after collecting four yellow cards.
