Tallaght to host EA Sports Cup final
It has been decided that Tallaght Stadium will host the EA Sports Cup final after a mutual agreement was reached by Drogheda United and Shamrock Rovers. The final is due to take place on the 22nd of September with a 5:45pm kick-off.
Speculating after his side reached the final, Drogheda United manager Mick Cooke said that he had no problems if the game were played in Drogheda or in Tallaght. In fact the Drogheda manager joked that with his team’s current away form maybe the best place to play it would be in the Tallaght venue.
Drogheda United booked their place in the final with a 2-1 win over Sligo Rovers at Hunky Dorys Park on Monday afternoon while Rovers’ easily dispatched First Division leaders Limerick FC at Tallaght.
The Boynesiders are playing in their first League Cup final since 1984 and their first cup final since they completed a Setanta Cup double in 2007. Meanwhile Shamrock Rovers are looking to win their first League Cup since 1977 when they beat Sligo Rovers 1-0 in the final They were also the designated home team in that game.
Stephen Kenny is arguably the most successful manager in recent times in the League cup, the former Dunfermline manager won the cup four times with Derry City.
The game will be broadcast live on Setanta with the winners netting €12,500 while the runners-up will net €7,500 as the prize fund has been increased this year.
