UMBRO Galway Cup begins

 


The UMBRO Galway Cup, one of Europe’s leading underage tournaments, begins on Wednesday at Drom soccer complex, the home of Salthill Devon FC.

 

Now in its 8th successive year, the competition will welcome 50 teams from nine different countries who will battle it out in what is expected to be one of the most thrilling competitions to date. The tournament will showcase the talents of some of the brightest rising young stars of our generation and we will see a total of 120 matches played across five different sections – the 1995 Cup, 1997 Elite, 1997 Boys, 1999 Boys and 1999 Elite.

 

The organisers have been hugely successful in attracting top teams to the competition and this year is no different. Some of this years’ participants include English Premier League title holders Manchester City’s U15 academy team, Malaga FC, Dynamo Moscow, Valerenga, Maccabi Haifa, Republic of Ireland, Aberdeen and more.

 

Over 1,100 players and coaches are expected to attend this four day event, which in the past has seen many young hopefuls succeed all the way to international and professional level, most recently, Conor Masterson - a player in last year’s tournament – who has just been signed by Liverpool.

 

Since its inception the tournament has become a major recruiting opportunity for the FAI who see the event as an ideal opportunity to spot talented young players who have the potential to go on to enjoy huge success playing the game professionally.



 

Tournament Director, Denis Burke, says “We are really looking forward to this year’s competition. With such a high caliber of talented young players competing, there promises to be quite a few very competitive matches. This year’s 1997 Boys Elite Competition is set to provide some of the standout matches the tournament. Kicking off tomorrow morning at 10.40 am, the Republic of Ireland will go up against Aberdeen, while a little later at 11.50 am Dynamo Moscow, will face Norwegian club – Valerenga. Manchester City take on Maccabi Haifa at while Dublin team, St. Kevin’s Boys, will be the only scheduled Irish clash against Manchester City – which gets underway on Thursday morning 10.40 am”.
