Yet another exciting addition in the already impressive line up at this year’s prestigious Umbro Galway Cup sees Malaga CF sign up, the first ever Spanish team to compete in the soccer tournament.

Hosted in Drom Soccer Park, home to Salthill Devon FC, this year’s tournament will see almost 50 teams from nine countries battle it out in what is expected to be the most exciting competition to date. The thrilling tournament, which has seen many Irish hopefuls go all the way to play at international and professional level, will see 120 matches played across five different sections – the 1995 Cup, 1997 Elite, 1997 Boys, 1999 Boys and 1999 Elite.

The 1997 Boys Elite Competition boasts arguably the most exciting line up in the history of the tournament. With the likes of Manchester City, Republic of Ireland, Dynamo Moscow and now Malaga all battling it out in this league, some exciting and fast paced games are promised throughout the duration of the four day event.

Malaga kicks off their Umbro Galway Cup campaign against Dublin side St. Kevin’s Boys on Wednesday, August 8th at 4.45pm. This is followed by two matches on Thursday against Maccabi Haifa and Manchester City.

Tournament director, Denis Burke, is looking forward to seeing what the Spanish side will bring to the competition.

“The organisers are delighted to welcome Malaga to this year’s tournament. The La Liga academy side will be the first Spanish team to compete in the tournament and will be expected to bring typical Spanish attacking flair to the competition.”
