Dundalk FC have announced the signing of former Monaghan United defender Paul Whelan. The versatile player, who can play at right back or centre-half joins the Lilywhites after he became a free agent following Monaghan United's decision to withdraw from the league. The 25 year-old has spent the majority of his career at Gortakeegan including 2011 season where he helped them to promotion. He spent a brief spell away from Monaghan when he joined Paul Cook at Sligo Rovers in January 2010 but then returned in July of that year.

Whelan becomes caretaker manager Darius Kierans' third signing of the July transfer window and joins William Woods and Philip McCabe who signed for the cash-strapped club last week.

On the flip side, Dundalk have also announced the departure of striker Shane O'Neill by mutual consent. The former Bray Wanderers player joined Dundalk in January of this year made a total of 16 appearances and scored 2 goals since arriving. However due to the financial strain the club is currently under, Kierans has been forced to release players. O'Neill joins Dan Cunningham, Ger Hanley and Gareth Coughlan out of Oriel Park as the club try desperately to relieve some of the pressure.
