McVeigh savours first and second senior goals

Paul McVeigh was delighted to make a valuable contribution to help Finn Harps collect a much-needed win against Mervue United on Saturday night.
The versatile McVeigh, more accustomed to playing on either flank, has been fast-tracked into a more central attacking role following season-long injuries to Blain Curtis and Stephen O’Donnell.
And the former Fanad United man came up trumps against fellow strugglers Mervue with his first and second senior goals for Peter Hutton’s side.
“It’s good to get the win because we needed it. It’s good to score but I don’t care who scores as long as we win,” he said afterwards.
His first goal came following a delightful one-two with veteran hitman Kevin McHugh, who netted the first goal on the night, but two goals from Alan Murphy hauled Mervue back on level terms.
And with the game in the melting pot McVeigh popped up at the near post to meet a Gary Merritt corner and power a header beyond Mervue goalkeeper Conor Gleeson.
“We were very unlucky because we were dominating and then they hit us on the break to get one back. The penalty was very controversial. I don’t think it was a penalty but we had to dig in and get another goal after that and lucky enough it was me who got it,” said McVeigh, who is hoping to retain his place in the starting line-up following his memorable double.
He added: “Well, Felix (Healy) signed me up but I wasn’t getting much of a chance but since ‘Pizza’ (Hutton) took over he’s been playing me and it’s up to me now to keep myself in the team and work hard. I know I still have a lot to learn but I’m willing to work hard. Hopefully now we can build on this win and make a surge up the table.”
