Bennion signs for Shelbourne

Shelbourne have announced the signing of former Monaghan United goalkeeper Chris Bennion, who arrives at Tolka Park on a short-term deal.

The 31-year old was released from Monaghan, along with the rest of the playing staff last month as the club were forced out of business.

Bennion has been linked with a number of Airtricity League clubs in recent weeks, following his departure from Mons, with Bohemians, amongst others, said to be keen. However, it is Shels boss Alan Mathews who has won the race to sign a keeper with vast experience in the league.

Born in Scotland, Bennion originally began his professional career with English side Middlesbrough. However, he found first team opportunities few and far between at the Riverside and was subsequently loaned out to Scunthorpe United.

His first taste of League of Ireland football came when he signed for Shelbourne. Since joining the club back in 2002, Bennion has gone on to represent a number of clubs in the league, including Dundalk, Athlone Town and St. Patrick’s Athletic.

Bennion’s most successful time in Irish football came at Oriel Park, where he made over 170 appearances during a five-year spell with Dundalk.

The signing of Bennion, who won a League of Ireland medal during his first stint at Tolka Park, will provide competition for current Shelbourne first choice Dean Delany. Bennion will remain at the club until the end of the season.
