Mulcahy joins Blues on loan

Waterford United have announced the loan signing of Stephen Mulcahy from Cork City.

The versatile 24-year-old Cork native has signed on loan until the end of the season, and it is expected that, pending registration, he will go straight into the squad for tomorrow night's game at home to Limerick FC.

Mulcahy can play at right back or centre back, and is also at home in midfield. He began his league career at Cork City, before a spell with local rivals Cobh Ramblers. Returning to his home club he established himself as a first team regular towards the end of 2009 and into the following year, earning him call up to Paul Doolin's Rep of Ireland U23 side, where he earned two caps, one against England at the RSC.

Unfortunately lengthy injury spells kept him out of the side for most of last season, but this year he is very much back and looking forward to forcing his way into contention for first team action.

Cork City manager Tommy Dunne is hoping that Mulcahy can get more playing team on his loan deal. “Stephen has had bad luck with injuries, and having returned to training, he now needs game time. He has worked extremely hard to get himself fit, but he now needs to play as many games as he can. While Waterford can’t guarantee him games, he should have more opportunity to play there than he might do here. It is one area of the squad where we do have cover. It will be good for him and I hope that he gets to play and can get 14 or 15 games under his belt and come back into the reckoning with us for next season.”
