Drogheda United have made Alan Byrne their first signing of the summer.

The 28-year-old joins Drogheda following Monaghan United's decision to drop out of the Airtricity League earlier this week. Byrne joined Monaghan in 2009 for his second spell at Gortakeegan and in that time went on to pick up the Supporters Player of the Year in 2010 and play a pivotal part in their promotion to the Premier Division last season.

He previously enjoyed a loan spell at Monaghan in 2003 and also played for Bohemians, Shelbourne and Kildare County where he made over 100 appearances between 2004 and 2007.

Byrne is the first player to find a club following Monaghan's decision to drop out of the League, and a number of his former teammates are also in talks with a number of League of Ireland clubs.
