Crawley rues early cup exit

Longford Town’s Thomas Crawley has expressed his disappointment at his side’s early exit from the FAI Cup.

Town were expected to see off Leinster Senior League side Cherry Orchard in their second round tie on Sunday afternoon but the Ballyfermot side caused a huge upset by beating the First Division leaders 2-0.

Crawley told extratime.ie that although the focus is the league, Town wanted to have a good cup run too.

“We are disappointed that we lost the game. We wanted to do as well as we could in the cup. Obviously we are concentrating on the league but today (Sunday) was all about the cup but we didn’t get a result.”

It was a poor performance from the Town and they were made to rue several missed goalscoring opportunities. Orchard made no mistake putting away the chances when they came their way.

“The lads were up for it more than us. We had a couple of chances. They finished their two chances and we didn’t finish any of ours,” said Crawley.

The Dub has impressed since he joined the Town from St. Pat’s in July of last year. He admitted that he’s enjoying life at the Midlands club and wouldn’t swap it for anything.

“It’s brilliant. I love it. It’s better than playing anywhere else. The lads are great, the manager’s great and the facilities too. I never really got a chance with Pat’s.

"Tony (Cousins) then came in and he offered me a good contract and a chance to play. Since I came to Longford around this time last year I have been doing well ever since.”

Crawley is noted for being an attacking player but so far this season he has been doing the business at left-back though he was switched to the wing during the game on Sunday. He has no real preference on either position, as long as he’s play.

“Either way it doesn’t really matter,” he said. “I love playing all the time, wherever Tony wants me to play. Once I have the ball at my feet and attacking, I don’t mind.”

Town now have to put this disappointing defeat behind them and prepare for the top of the table clash with Limerick in Flancare Park on Saturday evening. Crawley stressed the importance of the game.

“It’s a very important game. If we beat them again we’re seven points ahead. We have to pick ourselves up for this one and hopefully go on and beat Limerick on Saturday.”
