As summertime arrives regardless of whether or not sunshine and warmth follow, with it comes the first of the friendly games League of Ireland clubs traditionally arrange with their counterparts across channel. Despite the change to summer soccer, the "pre-season" friendlies have continued.

League One side Scunthorpe United, in association with Volkswagen Ireland, have confirmed that they will hold their 2012-2013 Pre-season tour in Ireland.

The tour which will take place from July 16th – 20th, will see the team staying at Carton House Hotel, which has been the home of Real Madrid and Wolves in the last two seasons providing fantastic training facilities for the squad.

It is provisionally planned that "The Iron" will play two games whilst in Ireland. On Tuesday 17th July, they will face Airtricity Premier League side Bray Wanderers at the Carlisle Ground subject to approval. Then on Thursday 19th July they will face Leinster Senior League side Wayside Celtic at the Golden Ball in Kilternan.

Scunthorpe United Manager, Alan Knill said, "The tour is a great opportunity to benefit from great facilities and start our push for a successful campaign next season. We are grateful for Volkswagen Ireland for their support and we look forward to a positive experience in Ireland."

Simon Elliott, Group CEO of Volkswagen Ireland and former Director of Scunthorpe United said, “It has been a real pleasure to organise and sponsor Scunthorpe’s Pre-Season Tour, and it is great to be able to further support the club and its supporters. It is a very short flight or ferry crossing, so I hope to see as many Scunny fans as possible here in Dublin.”

There are four Irish players on the Scunthorpe United first team squad, with Irish Internationals Jimmy Ryan, Michael Collins, Niall Canavan and Robbie Gibbons all set to feature in the pre-season tour.
