Disappointed McCaffrey calls for support

Dundalk lost their third match on the bounce on Friday night and speaking to extratime.ie after the match, manager Sean McCaffrey spoke of his disappointment to lose and frustration of how his side conceded the two goals.

"Disappointing. I didn't think we played particularly well but didn't think we played particularly badly either. We defended poorly. Gave away two penalties. The second penalty the young Bray lad carried the ball at least 50 yards, there wasn't a tackle put in on him and then we give away a rash tackle on the edge of the box.

"I think if Michael Rafter's shot had gone in then the outcome would have been different, but we're not getting them breaks at the moment. Having said that I don't know if we are playing well enough to get the breaks."

McCaffrey is baffled as to why his side seem to play better away from Oriel Park than in front of their own fans and is dismayed by their lack of chance creation.

"Every time we come to Oriel Park we're poor. Last week it was so promising, we played so well and deserved to get something out of the game. This week we put up a performance that wasn't much better than the Bohs game. We didn't create any chances.

"We had one other chance from a corner-kick and we should have finished it. It's something we worked on in training, it was a poor effort. We're not creating chances, we're struggling at the minute."

Despite the performance and the loss, the Monaghan native feels lack of confidence is a factor and praised his sides effort.

"It's not just lack of experience, it's lack of confidence that probably comes with winning. We are just looking for that we break at the moment but when you're down you usually don't get them but hopefully we'll get something soon.

"The boys are working fierce hard, all week. Listening, doing things right. It's just not happening. I think we're a break away from something decent."

McCaffrey proclaimed that there is no crisis at the club with the club having slipped to 11th in the table.

"I don't think there's a crisis yet. We still have a fair few games away because we have only played well here in one match against UCD. We got the performance right against Derry, we didn't get the result right last week but the performance was right.

"We have to keep performing, we have to keep putting in 100% effort and try and improve to rectify the problems. We'll keep doing that. Second from bottom is not good enough, however I didn't expect to have much more points than we have now. I am happy with our points total."

McCaffrey though is confident that the Louth club will go on to climb the table over the coming weeks.

"I am not concerned with the points we have at the moment. I am more concerned about improving the performances. If we can produce performances like we did in Cork, in Derry or the first-half in Sligo then we'll get points. If we can begin to put performances together here at Oriel Park then we'll coast up the table easily, I have no doubt about that."

The Lilywhites boss then went on to talk about the supporters and asked for them to get behind the team and get more vocal.

"I'd like to see a bit more real support behind the team. Oriel Park is a quiet place. I know it's up to the team to inspire the crowd but at this moment in time, the players need support. Some of the supporters are very good. Oriel Park is not a hostile place to come to, there's no noise when the other teams get the ball. In Cork last week we couldn't get instructions ten yards in front of us with noise, the Brandywell is the same.

"I'm not blaming the fans, I understand their frustration but it would help if the supporters gave a bit more support to the players, at the minute it's not happening. I am not concerned about the ones not coming out but the ones that are I want them to be more vocal."
