Before this season Noel Haverty had never scored a league goal but on Saturday night the Longford Town defender moved to joint top scorer at the club after he scored his fourth league goal of the season as the First Division leaders defeated Wexford Youths 1-0 in Flancare Park.

Speaking to extratime.ie after the game Haverty is delighted with his contribution so far.

“It’s great that we are spreading the goals around. It’s good that it’s not just the strikers that have to score all the goals. I’d never scored a goal before this season but it has all come at once. I’m happy coming up for corners and if one goes in, it goes in.”

The Kildare native has certainly made an impact at the Midlands club. In the close season he had attracted interested from Premier Division clubs but chose to come to Flancare Park and has been a regular in the side this season. He is pleased to get his games.

“I was with Pat’s for a few years and what was so frustrating is that you were sitting on a bench, it’s not great. I’m delighted with my decision to come here. There was one or two in the Premier clubs interested but I’d a few chats with Tony (Cousins) and I just thought this would be the right place. I took a year out last year I was happy to sign here this year.

“I’m loving it. There’s a great bunch of lads here. It’s going really well so far so hopefully we’ll just keep it going,” he added.

Things are going very well for Haverty and his team-mates at the moment but he is fully aware there is still a lot of football to be played.

“We are not really looking at the table at the moment, not this early in the season anyway. We just want to pick up as many points as we can then coming into the last series of games hopefully we are in a position to push on.”
