McClean honoured by club award
With the European Championships squad set to be announced this coming Monday, there is one player who has done himself a few favours in terms of getting on the plane to Poland.
Having netted a rasping free-kick in a 2-2 draw against Bolton on Saturday, James McClean's weekend was capped off by winning the Young Player of the Year award at the Stadium of Light.
Speaking to Rory Kelly of ExtraTime.ie, McClean expressed his delight at claiming the award, where nominees included fellow Irishman and close friend, David Meyler.
"It's a massive honour to have won the award. With it being an online vote, it's really pleasing to know people have voted for me.
"I think I've done reasonably well, and I'm happy with my performances since I've come in" he said.
With Giovanni Trapattoni declaring that there was a strong chance McClean would be included in the squad, the former Derry City winger said that he would be immensely proud should he get the call.
"It would be unreal. Being in the squad for the Czech Republic match was a memorable occasion for me and my family, and hopefully there will be good news come Monday.
"I'm not getting ahead of myself though. First and foremost I have a game against Fulham on Sunday to prepare for. Obviously it would be a great honour, but my season isn't over yet so hopefully I can keep pushing on at Sunderland" he told ExtraTime.ie.
McClean has netted six goals in twenty seven appearances since December, and is widely regarded as an integral part of the Black Cats plans, having signed a new contract at the club in March that will keep him on Wearside for another three years.
