Henderson becomes a Hammer

Republic of Ireland goalkeeper Stephen Henderson has joined West Ham United on a loan deal which will run until the end of the current season. After agreeing terms for a pre-contract and completing a medical, the Dublin born stopper will join the Hammers on a three year deal, beginning at the start of next season, for an undisclosed fee.

Henderson spent last season on loan with Yeovil Town and was named their player of the season. His heroics there earned him a starting place on his return to Portsmouth this year.

Prior to settling at Portsmouth, Henderson had been a trainee at Aston Villa before spending time with Bristol City, York City, Weymouth, Aldershot Town and Yeovil Town. The 23-year-old has also been capped numerous times at U21 level for Ireland, but is yet to make his debut at senior level.

Giovanni Trapattoni took notice of his fine club form over recent months, calling him up to the Irish senior squad for their friendly against the Czech Republic last month.

Gaining entry into the first team at Upton Park won’t be easy for Henderson however, as he will be in direct competition with England international Robert Green for the number one spot.
