Keegan keeping Youths focussed

Following last Friday's shock 6-0 win over Waterford United, Wexford Youths boss Shane Keegan has hailed the performance of his side, but said they won't be getting ahead of themselves.

The Youths led 3-0 at the break and their performance delighted the new manager. "It was a super performance by the lads and it was just one of those nights where everything went right" he told Beat102103..

“We had a game plan, we knew how we wanted to play we had an idea of how they play, we worked on specific things during the week to try and proceed what we see as their weaknesses and trying to nullify their strengths."

After his four goals in the hammering of the Blues, Tom Elmes is the top scorer over the two divisions and Keegan has labeled him a superb player who can hit the 20-goal mark this year.

"Tom was superb, but he is superb, people are saying Tom has equaled the amount of goals he scored for the whole of last season in tonight and I'm scratching my head wondering why that is.

He really is a superb player, he can score with his right foot, his left foot and his head and he can shield the ball. I said to him before he came out tonight that this has got to be a 20 goal season, lets try and get one or two tonight, but I wasn't expecting four off him."

Although it is a massive result for the Youths, the manager is looking at it like he would any other victory and has somewhat played down the scoreline.

"It’s a great start, there's two things I'll say, one that it's a great start, it's three points and it's no different than any other three points. If we had won the game with an own goal in injury time to win it 1-0, it's still three points and it doesn't matter how many goals you win it by. It's a great start, and start is the key word."

Wexford Youths travel to face SD Galway on Friday night.
