Four added to Showgrounds squad
Wednesday was a busy day for the pens in the Showgrounds, as no less than four players penned new contracts for the Bit O'Red today.
The club completed the signings of David Cawley, Pascal Millien, Colm McLoughlin and Liam Martin to bolster their squad ahead of the upcoming season.
Cawley has signed a 1 year contract with the club, while McLoughlin and Martin have penned 2 year deals with the current cup holders.
McLoughlin and Martin have both been promoted from the club's under-19 setup, with Martin already having made 2 senior appearances for Sligo. These two players represent the first players to have made the step up from the clubs scholarship scheme with ITSligo, a sign that is certainly encouraging for Bit O'Red supporters.
Cawley joins after a spell with Ipswich town in the Championship, and said via a Press Release that "It is brilliant" to have joined for the Bit O'Red. "It is a relief to get it sorted and I just can’t wait for the first game of the season. I came back from Englandlast year and I’ve wanted to kick on with a club in Ireland."
It's clear that the club's reputation was a factor in Cawley joining the club. “I know all about Sligo Rovers, I’ve seen the success the club has had with the FAI Cups. I was keeping an eye out even when I was with Ipswich because it was a fantastic achievement and I just want to help drive it on."
“We have a great group of lads with the club. I’ve seen that in the month that I’ve been here and it is brilliant to be part of it now.”
It is Millien's signing however, which seems to have captured the imagination of the Rovers' faithful. After greatly impressing in recent trial games, scoring a long range effort and a flamboyant celebration, the signing of Haitian International has greatly boosted morale among the fans. Millien joins after spells in the US with FC Tampa Bay in the North American Soccer League and the University of Tampa where he was a teammate of former Shamrock Rovers Ryan Thompson.
