Gerry Carr confirmed after Saturday's friendly game against Athlone that he has applied for the vacant managerial position at Sligo Rovers.

Carr is currently in charge of the team as caretaker-manager having spent almost five years as Paul Cook's assistant. Speaking to ExtraTime.ie after the 3-0 victory over Athlone Town, he revealed that he is ready to take the next step in his career.

"Yeah, I've made it quite clear that I'm looking to take the job,  I've told everybody at the club so it will be their decision and we'll see where that one goes."

After the news that Aaron Greene had not signed an SPC contract with the club, Gerry explained the situation with the winger.

"I've been told Aaron has possibly left the club, I can't confirm it at the minute but that's the last I heard so we'll see where that one goes, but if he's left, then we'll just have to try and replace him."

Putting off the field matters aside, he also took the time to discuss the sides performance tonight.

"Yeah it was good, obviously we've won the game but Athlone gave us a good test, they have three or four good chances themselves. It was a good workout as we prepare for the start of the season which is less than two weeks away."

Despite fears of morale and confidence dropping since Paul Cook's departure, Carr feels that there is no problems with the players as professionals they want to move onto the next chapter.

"Obviously a lot of people were close to Paul, a few of the players and that, but they're all professionals and they have to just move on and get on with their own focus, they're all contracted to this football club and at the end of the day they have to move on with their lives and move onto the next chapter. It was a positive result and it could have been an even better performance with another week or two behind us."

Carr is just one of many reported applicants for the job, which include ex-Ireland International Kevin Kilbane, former Aston Villa manager Brian Little and Mike Newell who most recently managed Danny North's hometown side Grimsby.
