Fabio delighted with Drogs return

Perhaps the lure of sheer nostalgia brought Declan O’Brien back to Drogheda United, but one thing is certain, United have made some fantastic additions in recent weeks and should not be taken lightly in the forthcoming season. Extratime.ie caught up with “Fabio” as he prepares for the 2012 Premier Division campaign.

“I felt I wanted to come back to a club I have a great history with before I finish playing.” These very words solidify speculation suggesting the move was one of sentiment for O’Brien, as well as a good career move. With Monaghan United having lost the majority of their stars from last season, ironically to Drogheda, O’Brien may not need to familiarise himself as much as previously required when transferring clubs. “I felt disappointed because of what happened when I left for Dundalk. I was made a scapegoat by certain rumours during administration but I'm not in football to make friends so I get on with it and only look to the future.”

“Pre-season is going fantastically well. I enjoy football a lot more as I get older as you always think it may be your last few years”. While there is wisdom in O’Brien’s words, his form for Monaghan United last year would suggest that “Fabio” is a long way away from hanging up his boots just yet.

While a certain amount of leniency is allowed due to a move up to a higher division, Declan would appear to apply pressure to himself in order to achieve his goals. “I feel big expectations, from myself. I set such high standards for myself, and if I can achieve my goals, I will be happy.”

As seen last season, Fabio’s cliché would appear to be true. “I don’t know if my First Division experience will exactly help me next year, but it is true that you get back what you put in.” It is unlikely that Drogheda will face a real relegation scare this year, while they most probably won’t be in the upper echelons of the league, but staying true to O’Brien’s words, if they push themselves, who knows.

The void left by the departing Dinny Corcoran to Bohemians has to be filled. Fabio is ready to step up to to the plate. With Peter Hynes coming in from Limerick along with Sean Brennan from Monaghan, goals shouldn’t be too hard to come by for Drogs this year, and O’Brien agrees. “I feel there are good options up top and I am looking forward to teaming up with any of the guys. Whoever scores and plays well will get the jerseys; it’s all very healthy competition.”

Usually when players or managers alike are asked to give a target for the year, they reply with rather withdrawn and vague statements. Declan certainly didn’t live up to the stereotypes. “We aim for a top five finish, and I get the feeling we’ll be in a cup final this year.”

In terms of personal aims, his goals are quite simple. “I want to score goals. A few would be nice, and a trophy, but I’m not fussy which one”.

A highly motivated Fabio O’Brien could well lead Drogheda United to better things this season. Stay tuned to Extratime for any updates.
