Denis Gillespie reviews former League of Ireland players' involvement cross channel over the past week.

 

Premiership         

 

Midweek Games

 

Stephen Ward, formerly of Bohemians played the full game for Wolves as Mick McCarthy’s side lost 3-0 to Liverpool.

 

Ex UCD and Derry City Striker Conor Sammon came on for Wigan after 74 minutes of their 3-1 defeat to Spurs.

 



On Wednesday night three former League of Ireland players were involved at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland. Ex Derry City winger James McClean played 90 minutes for the home side while his team mate David Meyler (ex Cork City) came on for last 8 minutes. On the opposing team was Norwich City winger Wes Hoolahan. The former Shelbourne man played 62 minutes for the Canaries as Martin O’Neill’s team won 3-1.

 

Weekend Games

 

Wes Hoolahan was again in action on Saturday this time he played 90 minutes in Norwich City’s 2-0 home win against Bolton.

 



Stephen Ward again played 90 minutes in Wolves 2-1 win against QPR. His team mate and fellow ex LOI man Kevin Doyle was the hero for Wolves though, the ex St Pats and Cork City striker who came on at half time, set up the equaliser before scoring the winning goal on 71 minutes.

 

James McClean continued his fine form scoring the winner on the hour mark as Sunderland beat Stoke 1-0. McClean and David Meyler both started the game, the Derry man played 90 minutes while the Cork man played 85.

 

The Championship

 

Midweek Games

 

Former Bohemian, Shels, Longford, Galway and Kilkenny City midfielder Gary Deegan played 90 minutes for Coventry City as they lost 2-1 to Blackpool.

 

David Forde (ex Derry City and Galway) played 90 minutes for Millwall as they lost 2-0 to Watford.

 

Keith Fahey, formerly of St Pats and Drogheda, played 90 minutes in Birmingham’s 4-1 win away at Leeds United.

 

On loan Ipswich striker DarylMurphy played 90 minutes and scored in his sides 5-1 win against West Ham. The former Waterford United man is on loan at Portman Road from Celtic.

 

Weekend Games

 

Keith Fahey was again in action for Birmingham City on Saturday, the Tallaght midfielder played 90 minutes as the Blues drew 0-0 with Southampton.

 

Two ex LOI players were on the pitch at the Ricoh Arena as Coventry lost 3-2 to Ipswich. Gary Deegan and Daryl Murphy both played 90 minutes with Deegan getting on the score sheet for the Sky Blues.

 

David Forde played the full match for Millwall who lost 2-1 away to West Ham United.

 

League One

 

Midweek

 

MK Dons had James O’Shea (ex Galway and Bray) and Shaun Williams (ex Sporting Fingal, Drogheda and Dundalk) in their line up as they drew 1-1 with Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday last. Williams played the whole game and O’Shea played 81 minutes.

 

Weekend

 

Mark McChrystal, the former Derry City defender played 90 minutes for Tranmere Rovers as the lost 2-1 to Wycombe Wanderers.

 

Former Bohs striker Paddy Madden came on as a half time substitute for Carlisle as they beat Chesterfield 2-1.

 

Shaun Williams played the full 90 minutes again for MK Dons in their 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town. Jay O’Shea played the final 14 minutes after coming on as a substitute.

 

Scottish Cup

 

Former Shels and Longford defender Sean Dillon came on in the final minutes of Dundee United’s 2-0 win over Rangers at Ibrox.

 

Three ex LOI men played for Pat Fenlon’s Hibernian side in their 1-0 win over Kilmarnock. Eoin Doyle (ex Sligo) scored the winner, he played 70 minutes before being replaced by former Cork City man Roy O’Donovan and Matt Doherty formerly of Bohs played 90 minutes for the Edinburgh side.

 

Richie Foran ex Shels played the full match as Inverness Caledonian Thistle lost 2-0 to Celtic.
