Dundalk FC this morning completed the signing of John Mountney from Mervue United. The 18 year-old central midfielder has signed a professional deal at the club until the end of the 2012 Airtricity League season.

Having made his debut for the Galway club last season, he went on to make 20 appearances for club as they secured their best finish in the First Division since their promotion from the A Championship in 2008.

Manager Sean McCaffrey knows the youngster from his time in the Ireland underage set up and is over the moon with his latest signing.

“John is a strong, box-to-box midfielder, and he has a good range of passing. He’s strong in the air, good in the tackle, and scores goals from long distance. “He’s a good player with a big future."

Mountney becomes Dundalk's third central midfielder, joining Stephen McDonnell and Chris Shields, and the manager would be more than happy to bring in another to suit a possible formation he may deploy.

“We have an outstanding midfield three, but we may play a diamond, so we’ll need four. Shane O’Neill can play in the No10 position as well, and we have another couple of midfielders from the underage teams. We have a young fella in called Robert Watters, who we capped in the home-based U18s a few years ago. He’s 21. He’s playing with UCC at the moment, and he had a short spell at Cork City. "

Mountney’s signature is McCaffrey's ninth signing so far, joining the already signed Stephen McDonnell, Chris Shields, Derek Foran, Eoghan Osborne, Nathan Murphy, Mark Griffin, Shane O’Neill and Gary Shanahan at Oriel Park.

With pre - season underway and trialists at Oriel Park, Dundalk are expected to announce further signings over the coming weeks.
